10 Reasons Your Home Looks Cheap: Interior Design Mistakes to Avoid

Creating a luxurious look in your home doesn’t have to break the bank. However, certain design choices can unintentionally make your space feel cheap. Here are ten common mistakes to avoid if you want to elevate your home’s aesthetic.

1. Grommet Curtains

Using curtains with grommets can detract from the sophisticated look you aim for. Grommet curtains often appear store-bought and lack the custom touch that makes a space feel high-end. Instead, opt for pleated or ringed curtains that can hang high and wide, offering a more luxurious vibe.

2. Overusing a Single Accent Color

While it’s common to choose a pop of color for your interior, sticking to one shade throughout can come off as overly matchy-matchy. Instead, consider using multiple accent shades or tones of the same color. This approach adds depth and visual interest to your home.

3. Mismatch in Dishes

The dishes and kitchenware you display say a lot about your style. Having a mismatched assortment of plates and cups can make your kitchen feel cluttered and unkempt. Investing in matching dinnerware can create a more organized and high-end appearance.

4. Underwhelming Bedding Choices

Transform your bedroom by upgrading to a larger duvet. For example, if you have a double bed, using a king-sized duvet can create a more plush and inviting look. layering your bedding correctly can provide that sought-after hotel-like luxury.

5. Furniture with Cup Holders

Furniture pieces equipped with cup holders can often appear bulky and cheap. Instead, utilize side tables for drinks to maintain an elegant style. This simple change can help your furniture feel more refined and less cluttered.

6. TVs in Corners

Placing a TV in the corner can make your entire room look awkward and cheap. Instead, consider creative mounting options or a stylish media console. Avoid making the TV the focal point; instead, integrate it seamlessly into your design.

7. Cluttered Closets

A crowded closet can make your entire space feel cramped and disorganized. To achieve a more luxurious feel, declutter and organize your closet. Utilizing alternative storage solutions can free up space and create an airy atmosphere.

8. Over-Displaying Decor

While it’s tempting to showcase everything you love, too many items can create a cluttered look. Instead, curate a selection of intentional, unique pieces that speak to your personality. This approach emphasizes quality over quantity.

9. Lack of Personality

Spaces devoid of personal touches often appear generic and cheap. Incorporating unique elements that reflect your personality and experiences can make a home feel more luxurious and inviting. Invest in art or decor that tells a story.

10. Standard Furniture Choices

Picking only standard furniture can lead to a cookie-cutter look. Instead, seek out pieces with character and style that resonate with you. Your home should be a reflection of your taste and not just a showroom.

By avoiding these common interior design mistakes, you can create a more luxurious and inviting home without spending excessively. Remember, it’s all about the details!

  3. @NancyJ238 says:

The video is fine, but you don't want to say "luxurious" and "high-end" so much.

  4. Also, remember she's staging in this video. The cohesive things you buy to match your replacement things can be colorful and lively, as long as they match. And look like sets of the same thing…

  5. You did not say where the TV could stay.😂

  6. I have already done all of these❗

  7. Grommet curtains are perfect if you’re buying curtains out of the box! The key is matching your rods/brackets to the grommets

  8. I truly see the difference, thanks for sharing

  9. I cannot stand grommet curtains… I think she’s spot on!!!!!

  10. Awesome! Can I just ask where your tree is from though XD

  11. I think TV’s just make every space look cheap. 🙈 put it in a game room or in garage!

  12. We deliberately bought a huge leather section with leather recliners and cup holders for our family/TV room which is up a short flight if stairs from the rest of the main rooms which are more traditional. I am from Europe and these US ultra comfy huge sofas are fun and I easily can get the leather retouched and they look like new. We have HD the sofa 12 years and everyone loves it. My 3 young adult kids pile on, my son and husband are both 6' 2" so there is enough space and legroom. I love my American sectional with cupholders!!!! Hahaha. You need some fun in your life.
