7 Curtain Mistakes That Can Make Your Home Look Awful

When it comes to home decor, curtains play a pivotal role in shaping a space’s ambiance. However, poor choices regarding fabric, length, and placement can lead to serious design faux pas. To help you enhance your home styling and avoid these common pitfalls, we’ve compiled a list of seven crucial curtain mistakes to steer clear of.

1. Curtains That Are Too Short

One of the most common mistakes is selecting curtains that don’t reach the floor. Short curtains create a disjointed look and fail to elevate the room’s aesthetics. Ideally, your curtains should graze the floor or puddle slightly for a more luxurious feel. If you have nine-foot ceilings, consider investing in longer curtains, often available at retailers like IKEA.

2. Hanging Curtains Too Low

Mounting your curtain rod too close to the window can make your ceilings feel lower and your room appear smaller. To create a more expansive look, install curtain rods two to six inches from the ceiling. This simple adjustment can dramatically change the perception of your space and make it feel grander.

3. Choosing Curtains That Are Not Wide Enough

Unsuitable width for your curtains can make your windows look bare and your room feel less inviting. Curtains should generally be two to three times wider than your window. For instance, if your window is two feet wide, opt for curtains that are four to six feet wide to create a fuller, pleating effect, enhancing the overall elegance of your room.

4. Using Cheap-Looking Fabrics

The fabric you choose can make or break your curtain design. Avoid low-quality materials prone to pilling or those that have a plastic look. Instead, lean towards natural fabrics like cotton or linen blends, which offer a timeless and sophisticated look. Affordable yet high-end options can often be found at stores like IKEA or Homesense.

5. Selecting the Wrong Color

Curtains can significantly impact your space’s color scheme. It’s essential to choose colors that either complement or contrast the hues in your room effectively. If you’re uncertain, classic white or off-white curtains are a safe choice that pairs well with most interiors. Alternatively, consider leveraging color theory to select shades that enhance or anchor your space aesthetically.

6. Choosing Patterns That Clash

While patterned curtains can add flair to your decor, it’s vital to select patterns that harmonize with other elements in the room. Avoid overcrowding the space with similar patterns; instead, mix scale and style for a balanced look. For example, if your throw pillows feature large floral designs, consider curtains with a smaller geometric pattern to create a harmonious contrast.

7. Not Considering Fabric Weight

The weight of your curtain fabric plays a significant role in functionality and style. Sheer fabrics may be ideal for areas with no privacy concerns, while heavier, blackout drapes are crucial for bedrooms to block out light effectively. Assess your room’s needs and choose the appropriate weight of fabric accordingly to ensure both style and practicality.

By avoiding these seven curtain mistakes, you can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. Remember, thoughtful selection and placement of curtains not only complete a room’s design but also contribute to its overall functionality. With the right choices, your curtains can bring warmth and sophistication to any space.

  2. Hello, good morning. I work in curtain automation equipment. Are you interested in chatting with me?

  3. I'm wanting to paint my bedroom walls a green and I can't decide which of those are my favorite. I know I'm doing french provincial/country furniture in mostly white. Then some mauvey/cranberry/raspberry or dusty blue accents. I like the idea of lace panels with a blackout shade but analogous sounds nice too. Something that goes with traditional and feminine for sure. If I did go with a white window treatment and had a white desk in front of it would that be too much?

  4. You didn’t address my concern. I just got new blinds and curtains. Now the guy did a nice job installing them and they look good but when I tried to draw the curtains open, I found that I really couldn’t. They’re 4 panels w/2 panels on each side. I can only draw them halfway maybe where they’re still covering most of the window anyway. What nonsense is this? When I want them open, I want them to open. When I want them closed then close. Now I’m stuck with curtains that won’t draw fully open on both sides and take up most of the window to boot. Any ideas?

How do I go light and airy but block the sun/heat on a Florida sliding door ?

Why are every one of you that make this kind of videos tell the same story it so boring

  7. Amazon sells really nice curtains too! Wide range of prices, sizes, colours and fabrics. Not a fan of grommet drapes because they look cheaper in my opinion. Planning a big curtain and window covering revamp this spring so you video was really helpful. Thanks

nice vid, i don't agree with the drapes though. if they are too high it kinda looks like an office or something not cozy. sometimes anyway.

I like the lower hung windows 😂

  10. You have to understand that some of us have heating vents on the floor and cannot do that.

  11. Curtains that touch the floor are too long. They look scruffy, grubby, and not tailored. As somebody who tailor made them for a living for years, this was our first lesson on curtain making. Curtains that pool on the floor were a passing fad and also look messy.

  12. 1:42 if my curtains grazed the floor, they would also be draped over my baseboard heaters, which is the exact thing the manufacturer says that you shouldn’t do because it’s a fire hazard (not to mention the efficiency of blocking the heat from getting to the room).

  13. No way do I want curtains touching the floor! That will be the fad that she and others will be criticizing 10 years from now.

  14. Curtains should come just below the sill. Waste of material to take them to floor level. Many people have radiators under their windows, curtains get scorched and discoloured, better with blinds or shutters. Curtains are very expensive and you need to consider the drawbacks before committing to something that may be a disaster. Light curtains are impractical with young children, and if too light then do not block people seeing in from outside.

  15. Puddling drapes are a stumbling/falling hazard and will not be at my windows. My 60 year old friends fell over hers and had a broken arm from the fall on hardwood floors.

  16. Regarding color….hmmm…check out the pillow/couch combo behind her….? But I'm no pro….I LOVE my charming cheap lace curtains, haha!

  17. Your tips are very good too know thank you

  18. All the curtains are a plain color. Can curtains with a horizonal wide stripes but are a light color be used?

  19. My radiators are under my small windows so can’t have curtains to the floor the stop the heat radiating into the room

  20. Here's what. . there is no wrong or right. It's all about what the woman of "HER" HOUSE wants and LIKES. The interests of a woman's idea and creativity is crucial thru out her life. You should never say or steer a home owner who is in charge of decor into a corner and saying no no. Let her explore. Let her use her colors and motifs to flow from one room to another. And thru time she will.marvel at all the different ways she has interchanged with her own still the same or mingled , and incorporating want toos and how to's. It's like a vacuum sweeper thing hun, some still have Kirby and are qite satisfied, some have hoovers and some have Dyson, even those circular remote robot sweepers. They all sweep floors but we all like different styles. It builds character. I realize about the curtains . I learned by just a coincidence. Watch TV, old westerns then falling in love with the house in big valley , bonanza, but I like bewitched, I would of killed for that house. All different but it works well. I know this because people are always telling me. " sandy I love your house. " thank you and good luck with your decir tips and suggestions.

Where to buy the curtains in your living room, I love them 🙂

  24. Curtains are so important – they can make a room look super special, cosy or rather uncomplimentary. Something that I discovered is, I actually needed and extra panel for the window, because when the curtains are drawn, it looks sort of very 'poor'!! Not in the financial sense but you have done the window short of style. I never thought of that, also, I was going to go for shorter curtains in the bedrooms, thankfully I saw this video and that is a definite no-no. The curtains do hang close to the ceiling, and covers all the way down to the floor. I do not like puddles, we changed the ceilings and they have been slightly lowered and the curtains puddle, should actually sew the hems up or cut them. It all depends on the style of the house, the room and ofcourse your budget. I really enjoyed the video, it has helped me to decide in making the correct decision. I also found, washing the curtains on a regular basis makes them last longer and needless to say, like anything else, they looks super after washing. Take care when working with the windows, use a sturdy ladder or walk way, have a super day. Kind regards.

radiators are usually under windows long curtains cover radiators in winter not good.

  26. What about using an average home or a low income home😮

  27. Generally neutral so your eye doesn’t dart to the window so fast.

That’s right, YOU like this style. It’s doesn’t mean that the rest of us are into your style. This is why there is no individuality in homes anymore..IN MY OPINION!
