7 DECORATING RULES YOU SHOULD NEVER BREAK | INTERIOR DESIGN BASICS

7 Decorating Rules You Should Never Break | Interior Design Basics
Creating a stunning and cohesive interior design can sometimes feel daunting. However, following essential guidelines can simplify the process. Here are seven decorating rules that will elevate your space every time.
1. Coffee Table Sizing Matters
The coffee table is a central piece in your living room, and its size significantly impacts the overall design. Ensure the height of the coffee table aligns with the height of your sofa’s seat cushions. A well-proportioned table will create a balanced look. Additionally, aim for a coffee table length that is about two-thirds the size of your sofa for a harmonious arrangement.
2. Layer Your Accent Colors
Uniform shades can make a space feel flat and sterile. When decorating, use multiple shades of your chosen accent color. Introduce deeper and lighter tones to add depth and interest, whether through paint, pillows, curtains, or rugs. This layering technique will give your home a more sophisticated and designer-like appearance.
3. Hang Wall Art at Eye Level
The placement of wall art is crucial for creating an integrated look. Hang art so that its centre is 57 to 60 inches off the ground. This height ensures that it resonates harmoniously with other elements in the room. For gallery walls, maintain that same midpoint across the grouping to create visual cohesion.
4. Contrast Your Trim with Walls
Always create a contrast between your wall color and trim. If you prefer a monochromatic scheme, ensure the trim shines with a higher gloss finish than the walls. This contrast emphasizes detail and adds a polished look. Whether you opt for darker trim against lighter walls or vice versa, this design rule will always add impact.
5. Perfect Curtain Rod Placement
Curtains play an essential role in softening the space. To maximize the appearance of your windows and room size, install the curtain rod at least 4 to 6 inches above the window frame, or even closer to the ceiling. This simple adjustment visually enlarges your room and creates an elegant feel.
6. Find the Right Height for End Tables and Nightstands
End tables should be positioned 1 to 2 inches lower than the armrests of your sofa or chairs to enhance functionality and aesthetics. For nightstands, align their height with the top of your mattress to ensure ease of access. Correct sizing fosters a balanced look in both living and bedroom areas.
7. Choose the Right Rug Size
Rugs can anchor your space beautifully. For bedrooms, ensure the rug extends at least 12 to 18 inches beyond the sides and foot of your bed. Recommended sizes include a 6×9 rug for double beds, 8×10 for queens, and 9×12 or larger for king beds. Layering a smaller rug on top of a larger one can also amplify the design.
Conclusion
Utilizing these seven fundamental decorating rules will help you create a harmonious and inviting space in your home. Remember, design is about balance, contrast, and layers. By following these tips, you can achieve a professionally curated look in your interiors. Happy decorating!

You have great visuals. I'm screenshoting and saving this for my home inspo!
You are one in a million.I have never understood interior designing like this before. You go girl!
I'm not sure that I agree with the rule, "The bigger the bed, the wider the night stand". The night stand in the example looked like a short dresser, which seemed unbalanced to me.
Do bedside tables need to match in terms of color, finish or tone? For example, can you do one table in wood and one painted light or should they ideally match (or at least be of the same tone)?
I'm going to implement these tips. Thanks.
Best video. Tnx!

can you make videos about these basics especially the measurement principles?
4:50 I'd challenge that. I have very complex trim and just did everything in the same eggshell color and it looks fantastic. No need to have different sheens or colors.
Great tips – thanks !
