An Introduction to Traditional Wall Clocks | Clock Shop Montville
Welcome to Clock Shop Montville! Today, we’re excited to present our exquisite range of traditional wall clocks, a timeless addition to any home. Unlike modern kitchen or office clocks, our traditional wall clocks feature delightful chimes, bringing a classic charm to your space.
Understanding Traditional Wall Clocks
When we talk about traditional wall clocks, we primarily focus on two types: chiming and striking clocks. Chiming wall clocks, such as those playing the Westminster or Big Ben chimes, offer melodic tones familiar to many. In contrast, striking wall clocks signal the hour with a distinctive strike on the hour and a single strike on the half-hour.
Mechanical vs. Battery-Operated Clocks
Our collection includes both mechanical and battery-operated models. Mechanical clocks often require winding via a key, typically every week or month. These clocks operate using three springs: one for timekeeping (moving the pendulum), one for chimes, and one for striking the hour. On the other hand, our battery-operated clocks can also chime – often providing the versatility to switch to a bim bam strike mode.
Features of Mechanical Clocks
Mechanical traditional chiming wall clocks feature the ability to silence the chiming manually with an on/off lever. Many models also have an automatic night off option that disengages the chime during the night, preventing disturbances from 10 PM until 7:15 AM the following morning.
In contrast, for striking clocks, you’ll typically find just two holes on the dial, corresponding to the pendulum and the striking spring mechanism.
Premium Features and Craftsmanship
All our traditional wall clocks are imported from Germany, where both the cases and movements are crafted. Starting from beautifully designed battery-operated models, as you venture into the mechanical range, you’ll notice exquisite detailing in cases, with options such as polished finishes and even small drawers for storage.
Higher-end models, such as our weight-driven regulators, are not only functional but serve as stunning statement pieces. Similar to grandfather clocks, these weight-driven models are larger and require winding but deliver a magnificent slow tick that adds character to any room.
Maintenance and Care for Mechanical Clocks
Unlike battery-operated clocks that demand minimal upkeep, mechanical clocks have numerous moving parts and need servicing every seven to ten years. This ensures they continue running smoothly, much like a well-maintained car.

How to repair
This video is amazingly helpful. It is so nicely spoken, easy to follow, and is so enjoyable. Thank you!
Such lovely clocks and great presentation!
I'm a Collector of Mechanical Clocks and so I come to see the Clocks – but the gentleman is SO handsome – I get distracted… 🙂
They are so cool!
What was the first one called at the intro
I found a mechanical Meiji 30 day two hole clock at an estate sale for $35 dollars yesterday. Someone was waiting for me to walk away from it to get it, but I googled it and saw how expensive they were and took it off the wall. I looks good with my vintage decor in my TV room…I'm so lucky to have gotten a REALLY good deal.
excellent. thank you so much for information
Well, today I learned that the weights on regulators are for timekeeping only with the chimes & strikes being spring-driven. I always wondered how they can have only two weights with three holes to wind! Cheers!
The clocks look amazing
