Don’t Make This Terrible Mistake: Sherwin Williams Interior Paints Unveiled

When it comes to choosing the right interior paint, the options can be overwhelming. Recently, my brother Josh and I attempted to create a comprehensive video review of Sherwin-Williams’ interior paint line but faced unexpected hurdles. Our filming experience was cut short when we got asked to leave our local Sherwin-Williams store! Thankfully, we persevered, and while we couldn’t film on location, we’ve compiled a detailed guide to help you navigate the several interior paint offerings from Sherwin-Williams.

Understanding Sherwin-Williams’ Paint Lines

ProMar Series

The ProMar series, designed for the professional market, is geared mainly toward commercial applications. This line includes:

  • ProMar 400 & 200: Ideal for wall paints, particularly useful in high-traffic commercial areas.
  • Pro Classic: A reliable choice for trim painting.
  • ProMar Ceiling Paint: Considered the go-to ceiling paint for its excellent coverage and finish.

Captivate

Captivate is Sherwin-Williams’ standard latex wall paint. While it may be popular, it often falls short in quality. Those seeking consistent results should be cautious with this option, as it may not meet your painting needs.

Eminence

Often recommended as a ceiling paint, Eminence has garnered a reputation for being inadequate. If you’re looking for better options, don’t settle for this one.

Cashmere

Cashmere presents a more refined appearance but tends to have coverage issues, particularly with darker shades. While it may look appealing in the can, it doesn’t always perform up to par.

SuperPaint

This is the first tier of paint that I genuinely recommend from Sherwin-Williams. SuperPaint offers excellent coverage across all sheens. The flat variant is a superb alternative for ceilings, especially if ProMar Ceiling Paint is unavailable.

Duration Home

My personal favorite, Duration Home, excels in both flat and matte finishes. It contains moisture and mold-blocking agents, making it an ideal choice for high-humidity areas such as bathrooms. This line performs well on walls and ceilings, offering longevity and ease of application.

Emerald

Emerald is Sherwin-Williams’ flagship paint line. It is known for its deep, rich colors and contains similar moisture-blocking properties as Duration Home. When considering dark colors for accent walls, Emerald is the best option to prevent issues like picture framing and alligatoring.

Emerald Designer Edition

Although I lack extensive experience with this line, the Emerald Designer Edition is significantly pricier, priced around $120 per gallon. If you’re considering this premium option, make sure it fits your specific needs.

Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel

This hybrid paint has quickly become our go-to for trim work over the last two years. Available in satin, semi-gloss, and gloss finishes, it offers versatility and durability for various applications.

Conclusion

Selecting the right interior paint from Sherwin-Williams can significantly impact your project’s success. With various options available, it’s crucial to do your research and choose wisely. Remember, while colors and finishes may look appealing, the quality and performance of the paint should guide your decision. Final Thoughts

Don’t make the mistake of settling for lower-quality paints. Investing in reliable products like Duration Home and Emerald can save you time and money in the long run. Happy painting!

  1. 🔥DIYers! Get our Free paint, primer, and supply guides here: https://www.skool.com/paint-your-home-now-free-5539/about

  2. I'll tell you what, we've had great experiences with Cashmere. It looks great, covers well and once cured marks can be easily wiped off. I may try Emerald on my next job but Cashmere has been my go-to paint and never a complaint. Only compliments.

  3. For bathrooms, which sheen of Duration do you recommend? Thanks for all the great info here!

  4. I bought their hgtv interior exterior and it’s so thick it’s awful

  5. I feel like I can’t get a straight answer about cashmere vs emerald. I put on one can of emerald in simply white and it looks terrible.

  6. Great Video…. Concise, Blunt and to the point

  7. What do you use for primer under emerald acrylic latex wall paint AND emerald urethane trim paint?

  8. Where would you put Ovation on this chart? My guess is near the bottom. Thats the line of Sherwin Williams sold at Lowes. It smears, doesnt cover worth sh!t and never hardens. It will peel of like sunburnt skin even up to 4 years later. Yet still costs nearly $50 per gallon.

  9. Your videos are a step above! The B-roll basement store was better than anything you could’ve done in the actual store because of the epic props and signs! 😂 And if that Emerald Designer paint changed itself to the perfect paint color before it painted itself on the walls, I’d definitely pay that much for a gallon. 😉

  10. I used Cashmere a year ago and recently leaned some artwork against the wall and when I removed it it left areas where it looks as if it the frame corners pushed the paint and there is an area where I can see the original paint. Is that because I applied it wrong or the paint itself?

  11. Sherwin-Williams should seriously consider letting you guys film in a store. This video alone just made me go by Sherwin-Williams paint instead of going to my local box store.

  12. Will never buy this crap

  13. @JS-cb7rx says:

Does Duration and Emerald come in eggshell? We're painting our entire house and I just am scared that it will be too shiny in satin.

  14. @swere1240 says:

CHB we always used for ceilings then promar 200 for walls then for trim paint we used diamond vogul super quick 30 which works super good it doesnt sag super easy and touches up with a foamy roller very well and is a great tough surface. then for stained trim we just used 1 coat sanding sealer 2 coats laquer.

  15. COME TO SW AT SEEKONK MA!!! Not sure where you guys live but ill let you guys record, around and the backroom, for any video ideas you guys have. Just have to convince my manager since im still a new employee 😭

  16. @csimet says:

I generally like SW paints… used Cashmere (white) eggshell for a tongue-n-grove ceiling in a family room and attached kitchen that came out very well.. more of a satin'ish look. It seems to be smooth enough to allow the occasional wet wipe down that a kitchen needs… yes, the ceiling. 😉

My go-to paints for walls is the Emerald line (usually satin) and their specific door & trim paint ( "HGTV" branded semi-gloss) for millwork and doors that is not shown in your lineup. Seems very durable and remains ever so slightly flexible to take knocks and dings. You can usually get them on sale a few times year… 20-40% off.

  17. Duration comes in an egg shell as well, right?

  18. When using the Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, do you need to prime over the old trim paint? Bare trim I get it but old potentially latex gloss paint on trim seems to have a tendency to peel off later or if you're scrubbing on it.
I'd rather take the time to "Kilz" over the old latex gloss (After light sanding) rather then get a call back.
I know there are NO short cuts when you're doing a good paint job.
    Reputation and all.
    Great show!!
Not sure why SW would not want someone that actually uses and knows their products would want to hide from the public that actually BUYS their products.
And you know what that does when you go in and try to get HONEST info from an SW salesman.
I do like the Emerald brand for all my wall work but have not used this product EUTE for the trim as yet. I've always been an OIL BASE guy for all trim. I don't want to see little crawling babies peeling and eating the paint.

  19. You're hilarious. Thank you for this.

  20. what is picture framing? Aligatoring?

  21. what's your recommendation for a paint to use on interior garage walls? High humidity & temperature fluctuations

  22. Thank you for your honesty. I sometimes have problems with getting recommendations from S and W from behind the counter. I bought Cashmere because I got a discount for it and it's complete garbage. For a few dollars more you can buy Benjamin Moore Regal Select and it is far superior. I just got a contractor's account last year so I wanna try some of their products so I'll check out Duration and Emerald. Haven't heard anything bad about Emerald.

  23. Does Josh's Sherwin Williams take coupons?

  24. Great stuff as always Mr. Jeremy!
Have you tried SW Premium ceiling paint? If so what do you think? I just used it on a nightmare bedroom make over I’m STILL working on and it’s pretty nice I think and pretty bright white🤷🏻‍♂️
Only other paint I’ve used in a long time has been Behr ( not enough room to explain half the problems I’ve had with this project because of that being the underlying paint from 22 years ago, but let’s just say it doesn’t like to be re wet! It just lets go!!)
I’ve got the walls in oil based primer now because of it🤬
I know their stuff has gotten marginally better and their ceiling paint is ok but I won’t touch any of it anymore, I’ve had enough.
Which line from SW would you recommend for a flat wall paint for a bedroom? I get great pricing from my local SW ( the chick there digs me😉lol)
I don’t wanna get too crazy but want to use something that’s good, covers well, sticks well, and holds up. What’s your favorite?
    Thanks!

  25. This video is awesome.

Can you do more videos regarding SW (great sayings and store simulation) but focusing just on wipe ability , cost, finishes and how they look on the walls , etc.

  26. Damn, the Duration Matte is $80+ for a gallon. Benjamin Moore Regal Select is $72. Paint has gotten super expensive!

  27. As a painter contractor for over 40 years the pro mar line is the best paint on the market my opinion. I use the eggshell finish most colors touch up very well and has a very nice sheen.

  28. I’m repainting my oil base trim and would like to switch over to latex trim paint. Do I need to sand and prime or is there a latex paint that would stick to the oil base trim. Would emerald urethane work for this application?
I used painters edge plus in pure white on the ceiling with great results. It had virtually zero splatter off the roller.

  29. N4N, but I’d gladly pay $120 a gallon for the Emerald Designer series paint IF it applied itself and showed me a flawless finish. No – I am not lazy, just not a professional painter (although I wish I was). I’m just was too picky and hard on myself.
Guess I’ll stick with the regular Emerald and Duration line and just say a prayer to the paint gods when I go at it.

  30. Never ever buy the captivate series!! This literally cannot be considered paint. I put 3 coats on and still the finish is terrible! The consistency is like yogurt and the coverage is unbelievably horrible. Add on the price and YOU JUST GOT SCREWED!! Do yourself a favor and don't buy paint from this company. Is a fancy storefront that sells worse than ikea quality products.

  31. I feel more confused. LOL Also in my HO sherwin williams also lost a customer with me.

  32. I want to be a painter

  33. My grandma ha cashmere

  34. Our builder used cashmere. Our main color was moth wing (kind of a darker beige) and even the builder couldn't do touch-ups on it — it was awful. I can't tell you how many times we had them try to fix the issues during the build. They ended up repainting some walls entirely… and we just gave up in other spots (I can still see touchup in a hallway 6+ years later, ugh). does the duration/emerald have this problem? I'm really super hesitant to do anything Sherwin Williams after that disaster… but they have a (dark) color I think I want to use for an accent wall in my bedroom….

  35. – Do you find the Emerald Urethane trim in Satin finish to be especially glossy or pretty normal for satin ?

  36. @ajmz714x4 says:

So, absolute best SW suggestion for bathrooms?

  37. I’m a DIY guy that has used a few of these. I’m not a fan of Cashmere mostly because of durability, it will look shabby in short order. I too like Duration. I’ve only used Emerald Exterior, and it is great stuff. Finally I’ve used Emerald Urethane on cabinets and had great success, although I think I will give it a go on the next trim I do.

  38. We moved into a new home and the builder used paint contractors that used Sherwin Williams paint. We need a small amount (a quart) for touch ups and were told that minimum size would be a gallon for I suppose the ProMar paint. Would using the Duration is the same color and sheen be a suitable paint or will it differ on the wall when compared to the ProMar? Thanks for the great video.

  39. What do u recommend for kids,we have tried duration, pro classic and there staining and not washing off, help,I don’t know what paint brand to go with that will hold up to dirty prints, stains

  40. @Tbone.357 says:

I sprayed miles of trim with pro classic and loved it. To each his own I guess.

  41. This was a great video for an interior wall painting novice like myself. I recently bought a house where every wall is painted a different color. Yeah I won't get into that. In the living room two walls are painted dark brown. I'm wondering if the Sherman Williams duration Matt in an off-white is going to cover that in one coat? Or if there's something I need to prime the wall with first. Thanks for all the great information in the video.

  42. So where does their extreme cover paint stack against the ones you have listed here?

  43. @tienh8087 says:

Can you do a video on the promar lines?

  44. @psalm2561 says:

Thanks for the reviews of each type of paint SW has in their line and their differences. Although, maybe you can answer this as both my husband and I are dumbfounded:

My husband and I are building a brand new house from the ground up (new Sheetrock and mud and a coat of Kilz primer and sealer) and we were gifted with a deep base Emerald paint in our master bath. However, the color we were gifted was too light of a color so we went down to our local SW to have them tint it to the color we wanted, which they did. So, my husband, who is a building contractor and has painted thousands of cabinets, walls, and trim over the course of his career painted the first coat and it looked awesome, however we still could see areas where we needed a second coat, so we decided to paint the entire master bath with a second coat. The second coat, which came out of the same gallon as the first, is where things got bad. Once it dried, it looked as though the entire bathroom had been dry rolled and looks awful and are forced to start all over. We are hoping just another gallon of paint of a different brand (like Glidden Premium or Behr Marquee) will work over the top and won’t have to prime again.

Both of us are dumbfounded as to why the second coat did this – do you guys have any insights as to why or how this could have happened?

    Thanks

  45. The best looking paint on walls I think would be an eggshell finish. No matter what brand of paint you use, it always leaves a shiny spot when removing a dirt mark. I wish they could eliminate that problem.

  46. @fairamir1 says:

Alligatoring ? Do you man the ripples you get if you roll too much paint in one area or ???
