Top Window Treatments That Will Transform Your Home (Renter-Friendly Options!)
Are your windows looking plain and uninspiring? Transform your home with the right window treatments! Whether you’re a renter or just looking for easy-to-install options, here’s a comprehensive guide to the best window coverings for every room.
1. Drapery Panels
Drapery panels offer a formal look and come with a light-filtering or blackout liner. Light-filtering panels allow natural light while maintaining some privacy, ideal for living rooms or bedrooms. On the contrary, blackout liners are perfect for media rooms or nurseries, ensuring complete darkness for better sleep or focus.
How to Hang:
- Use a traverse rod to hide the mechanics.
- Choose a simple rod with or without rings for a casual look.
2. Curtains
Unlike drapery panels, curtains are typically unlined and more casual. They come in various colors, patterns, and fabrics, making them versatile for any space in your home.
When to Use:
- Perfect for adding color and lightness without the heavy feel of lined drapes.
3. Sheers
Sheers are a favorite for creating an airy feel in any room. Their gauzy fabric filters in soft daylight while offering a sense of privacy. Use sheers in rooms with no direct line of sight from neighbors, allowing beautiful natural light to fill your home.
4. Window Shades
Window shades come in various styles and are either mounted inside or outside the window frame.
Popular Options:
- Roller Shades: Easy to use and available in numerous fabrics.
- Roman Shades: A more traditional option, adding elegance to any room.
Cordless options are great for homes with kids or pets, ensuring safety while maintaining functionality.
5. Blinds
Blinds come in horizontal or vertical slats and can be made from various materials. Wood blinds provide a traditional look, while fabric blinds can enhance the softness of the space.
Pros:
- Adjustable slats allow you to control privacy and light effectively.
6. Shutters
Custom-made shutters offer maximum control over light and privacy. They’re especially popular in humid climates due to their thermal properties. Consider layering shutters with softer treatments like drapery panels to create a welcoming aesthetic.
Choosing the Right Fit for Your Room
Step 1: Determine Function
Assess what you need in your space:
- Privacy?
- Light control?
- Aesthetic appeal?
Step 2: Select a Type
Choose based on the formality of the room:
- Formal: Opt for drapery panels or layered curtains.
- Casual: Consider sheers or simple shades.
Step 3: Choose Color and Material
Color is personal! Align your choice with the room’s function and overall vibe. For a cohesive look, pull colors from your artwork or accessories.
Room-Specific Recommendations
Bedroom
Layer sheer panels with heavier curtains for a romantic and elegant look. Floor-to-ceiling treatments can make your ceilings appear taller.
Bathroom
For a moist environment, opt for light-filtering options like easy-to-clean non-woven shades or relaxed Roman shades that add a refined look.
Kitchen
Choose low-maintenance options like solar or roller shades. In a monochromatic kitchen, woven shades can add texture without overwhelming the design.
Living Room
Sheers allow for privacy while letting in beautiful light. Consider layering with curtains for a more polished look.
Dining Room
Mount panels closer to the ceiling to elongate walls visually. Drapery panels work fabulously with sliding doors for a soft and inviting feel.
Home Office
Customize window treatments based on privacy and light filtering needs. Sheer panels can be swapped out for fabric shades that minimize sunlight glare on screens.
Conclusion
Choosing the right window treatments can elevate your entire home while being renter-friendly. Take your time to weigh your options and find the perfect fit for each room. Remember to consider functionality and aesthetics to create a living space that feels cohesive and inviting. Happy decorating!

hello happy morning. we are a curtain automatic equipment source factory, if you are interested in understanding welcome to contact me at any time!
Thank you. I’m planning for the windows for our new house, and for the old one, I simply went for blinds for all windows, now I want a more sophisticated ones! This video is super helpful!
Can you tell me what the wall covering behind the bed at 9:54 is? Thanks for your “get right to business” style that maximizes the amount of content in a short viewing space.
What?
SO HELPFUL🥳
Do you have to use plain colored curtains? Can a sideways wide stripe be used?
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🏆💛
I have vertical blinds in all my rooms, with nice coloured patterned blackout ones for my office and bedroom to match the wall paint, and pull down roller shades in the dining room and hallway facing the front, nothing in the kitchen yet. But I live in the UK where is is cold so need some insulating curtains for the living and bedrooms. For my bathroom the previous owners used those metal type horizontal shutter like blinds that you roll up and down
❓❓❓❓Is it okay to do decorative semi-sheer side panels in a living room?
I have basically a wall of fairly large windows that have a beautiful view of trees. The windows have about a 5” of separation between them and I don’t have major privacy issues but I do have neighbors down below.
I wouldn’t have the space between to have full, lush curtains with extra fabric on the sides without blocking a lot of the windows/nature views. i just want the decorative aesthetic of fabric there and to use just enough fabric to be able to close them.
Would this be considered tacky? Does anyone know? I have searched everywhere I can think of and can’t find an answer. ⁉️☹️
Are tie backs still in style? Please help.
this was very helpful. It was driving me crazy what to use for kitchen because of kitchen counter and bathroom window near a shower. Thank you so much
Window "coverings" are a type of window "treatment", but not exactly interchangeable terms. All window coverings are treatments, but not all treatments are coverings (for privacy and light control). Decorative treatments like valances, cornices and awnings are examples of treatments that are NOT coverings.
trying to figure out my kitchen windows the are small and only go to the counter im thinking roman shades I would like privacy at night we live near a busy road
arn't roman shades really really hard to clean
What are the type of shades @ 9:40?
Hi Julie, i love your videos, thank you so much for sharing so generously 🙏
Here is my window dilemma, I have a 5 mts tall x 2,5 mt window with a concrete bim 10 cm in front of the window. I need privacy in the day and a blackout at night. In this 10 cm space, I could not fit 2 window treatments.
Any suggestions? thank you 🌈
Julie, I just moved to a new home and you have helped me out with all my windows in my home. Thank you so much for all your help
Wonderful videos! I love when you provide places to purchase. Please help me get a great bureau for the bedroom. You did a great video for night stands and I am getting the Canope bed frame you suggested and thank you for those. But I cannot find a quality bureau because I don;t know what to look for and if spending $3,000 it needs to be well made and I don't know how to ensure that so places to buy is so good. Thank you! Kathy
How would you cover a slightly arched bedroom window that faces the street?
I need window treatments. I have a wide window in the living room, next to the sliding door, which is also next to my kitchen, which is big as well. I bought curtain panels for the living room window and sliding door, what about my big O window in kitchen? I was thinking of Roman shade. My color curtains linens are cream beige. Will roman shades match with my curtains? I feel like my colors don't match too.
Can we mix blinds ans sheer together?
Thank you! What about windows with a half arch above them? How do you address those that are not rectangular?
Enjoyed this video and the pace in which you've shared.
I"m surprised you like sheers so much. They feel very dated to me. Maybe because my mom always had so many sheers in her homes. I can't imagine ever using them.
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing reviews and tips on choosing beautiful furniture! Your videos are incredibly helpful and inspiring.
This video was incredibly helpful, Julie! Your tips on choosing the right curtains for different rooms have completely transformed my home. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
I've had many different window treatments and blinds are my favorite for light control and keeping clean.
how do I measure each of double drapes with a triple pleat header? should I add few more inches each panel to ensure there will be no gap in between?
I do not like blinds and shutters. I prefer motorized dual shades, one for view and the other for privacy, layered with sheer curtains for added softness.
The sheers behind you are absolutely beautiful! Could you tell me where you got those? Lovely video, very helpful!
What color rod should I use if the crown molding is white, wall is swiss coffee and the curtains are ivory/cream. The rods will be hung on the wall at the lower edge of the white crown molding. Thank you
Can you show it closer couldn't see the sheer close enough
❤
Hi Julie! I am your recent follower of your content! Want to ask one question, what’s your take on zebra(day and night) window treatments? And will it look good with drapery panels? Like two layer of window treatment?
Thank you for this video. What would you do with a triple window with a half round window above the center window. Would the rod go above the semi circle window or below it across the top of all three? Thank you in advance.
After years of experimentation, decided to go with single track semi block out curtains , doing away with sheers and yet sufficient privacy even at night. Way less material required
What do you recommend for a large living room window that has a 6” baseboard heater below? I want the curtains floor length . Is this possible? The dining room will have same curtains but there is no heater. Your help is greatly appreciated.
wrap around curtain rods vs straight? which is better?
Love, love this video!! I live in an apartment which has horizontal blinds on every window accept the sliding glass door which have vertical blinds! I hate blinds and wondered if I can use curtains over them since I’m not sure I’m permitted to remove the blinds?!
I have low ceiling windows in my bedroom, what kind of curtains I should use?
Where is the best place to buy drapes and curtains? Thank you.
