Which Sherwin Williams Interior Paints Are the Best (and Worst)?
When it comes to interior paints, Sherwin Williams is a trusted name in the industry, known for quality and a vast range of colors. However, not all paints are created equal. If you’re planning to refresh your living space, it’s essential to know which Sherwin Williams interior paints stand out and which might fall short.
Best Sherwin Williams Interior Paints
1. Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex
Emerald is celebrated for its exceptional durability and finish. This paint is ideal for high-traffic areas due to its resistance to stains and scuffs. It offers excellent coverage and a beautiful, rich appearance. Additionally, the low-VOC formulation makes it a healthier choice for indoor environments.
2. Duration Home
Duration Home paint is a favorite among homeowners seeking a long-lasting option. Its unique formulation allows for easy touch-ups without repainting the entire wall. It’s particularly effective for family spaces, as it resists stains and cleans up easily with soap and water.
3. SuperPaint
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on quality, SuperPaint is a great choice. It provides excellent coverage, applying smoothly and evenly. This paint is also known for its fade-resistant qualities, making it suitable for rooms with lots of natural light.
4. Optimum
For those who want a premium finish, Optimum is worth considering. This paint offers superior coverage and a stunning, high-end look. It is perfect for formal spaces where aesthetics are a priority. The paint also comes with easy application properties.
Worst Sherwin Williams Interior Paints
1. Promar 200
While Promar 200 is often seen as an economical choice, it doesn’t offer the same durability or coverage as some of the other options. Users have complained about how quickly it scuffs and how much effort is required for touch-ups. This makes it less practical for busy households.
2. Harmony
Though marketed as eco-friendly with low VOCs, many consumers have reported issues with durability and washability. It may require frequent repainting, which can become costly over time. If you’re looking for lasting results, you might want to steer clear of Harmony.
3. A-100
A-100 is another paint that often disappoints users. While it may initially seem like a cost-effective option, its application can lead to uneven results. Some reviewers have noted issues with fading and chipping, making it a less favorable choice for interior walls.
Conclusion
Choosing the right Sherwin Williams interior paint involves considering factors such as durability, coverage, and finish. While Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, and Optimum rank among the best, paints like Promar 200, Harmony, and A-100 may not meet your needs for longevity and aesthetic quality. Before making your selection, consider your specific requirements and the conditions of the spaces you’re painting to ensure a satisfactory result. Happy painting!

Hi. So would you recommend Emerald interior acrylic latex in satin for bathroom walls and ceiling in a room with a shower that produces a lot of steam and moisture? Also can it be used on the trim and doors or do I need to get the trim enamel for that? Thank you.
This video makes me wonder if you have ever used the products you blast. Anyone who thinks Cashmere is a worse product then Promar 400 is simply uninformed. I've used Cashmere for a number of years. It is the easiest paint to roll that I can find. No it is not worth the list price but neither are any of Sherwin Williams products. Im paying about $38 a gallon and I dont think there is another product that is even close at that price point. Ive watched a number of your videos and i think Ive had enough of uniformed hype.
Also- just wanted to say I'm LOVING your channel!
haven't painted a wall in like 15+ years and the last time I did. . .i was an impatient teenager, that decided a bright red accent wall with dark aubergine was going to be NBD. I was so very, very wrong. So, I have been treading water trying to figure out how to not mess my walls up. I got lucky and chose to use SW Emerald paint for a dark, intense color (even before seeing your video– so I'm happy i didn't make a mistake.
Keep the content coming!
If you havent made a video for ultra beginners including protips for how to store unused paint overnight (not ideal, but sometimes life happens), roller care, brush care– stuff like that, that would be much appreciated!
(I know it makes me sound like an idiot, but I'm sure I'm not the only one)
4:25 heard Positive thing …
followed by "…the can looks nice."
Black & gold😂😂😂 love that (i have been huge art deco fan all my life– so that can caught my eye too. to be clear- loved art deco since i was a child- well before the recent revival got wrecked by certain celebs. . .)
Which is the best one coat paint for the walls. I want matte flat and is it best to use acrylic or latex?
Which paint would you recommend for a white exterior door? Thanks.
Ugh. Benjamin Moore, all day. Highest available quality.
do you work for or sponsored by SW?
chb??
best ceiling paint
In the past, I have had bad results from SW Promar 200 eggshell, though the Promar 200 low sheen did good.
Please review the brand of HGTV door and trim.. and interior exterior. Cause that stuff is so thick you cannot spread it… I mean it’sjust crazy.
I’m just an aging homeowner that misses the paints from years ago. Most any brand back then, was great and cheap! Today, even for my painting needs… one has to be so wealthy!
Anyhow, for that reason, I go to my Sherwin-Williams store and get ProMar 200 but I have not tried the ProMar 200 HP as of yet. I don’t need my home to be scuff proof. I’m very tidy and respectful of my home. Nothing jumping around, damaging things. lol
With that, I did buy the Emerald Designer for living room accent walls. Went on silky smooth. Other than that, not impressed after painting the dark green over medium grey walls. Two coats for each wall. The cut-in areas showed up as off-color. Weird!! I’ve had better luck with paint from Habitat re-store!!
A pro painter the didn’t remove the register on the lid while rolling. I’m sold.
Have they changed something with their paints I've noticed lately that duration seems to be really thin doesn't cover like it used to
Hey Jeremy I just want to thank you for all the great videos you have done. I have learned a lot from you, from paint brushes, techniques in painting and many more. The first video that got me subscribing and watching you is the damn Corona brushes, I started with Vegas then Corona and you are right they are awesome paint brushes. I use to spray a lot, now not so much except for the exterior. Now I roll or brush most of the interior work, I love doing my cut ins now because of you and the damn awsome Corona brushes. Thanks man!
Thanks for all the helpful videos! I recently purchased a gallon of duration satin, but after learning more about the various finishes I think matte will look better. Would there be any issue in using the gallon of satin as a first coat, then switching to matte for the final coat?
have you ever just left a pva primer coat (new drywall) for ceiling paint since its flat white? if not why? I did for one of my rooms and nobody notices lol they pay no attention to it.
I like your content and have quite a few shared opinions on my preferred products and painting process. I worked for Sherwin til I self promoted to the other side of the counter earlier this year. Your videos have helped me transition my thought process from the sales to the consumer side of the goo business. Something that I have heard you mention in a couple videos now that I think would be worth fact checking is Emerald wall paint being moisture resistant. Duration absolutely is moisture resistant which helps a lot with surfactant leeching in bathrooms. They are both mold and mildew resistant which does contribute significantly to how the paint holds up in high humidity scenarios. Its almost just semantics but there is actually a valid reason to use Duration over Emerald in bathrooms. Sorry for the info dump rant. I spent many many hours scouring data pages and testing products while working at Sherwin. I hope this is more interesting than it is annoying.
I’ve heard conflicting things about color matching. White Dove is a BM color that I want to use emerald with, think I’d have any issues? Tbh Ive never thought twice about this but now I’m questioning everything
Can I apply Emerald flat or matte of the same color over pro mar eg-shel without sanding?
I like the look of superpaint satin that's currently in my home but have heard great things about duration matte. Is the matte very shiny in comparison to superpaint satin?
Mr. Jeremy – Great videos and advice. I was trying to get the free paint guide and requested several times with no luck. Any way you can help me. Please keep up the great work! Roseann
What would you recommend for ceiling paint if SW pro mar ceiling paint can’t be purchased for a decent price?
My living room has yellow walls. Wife wants green walls. After seeing this video I got some Sherwin Williams green paint. I painted the walls with it – NOW THE WALLS ARE GREEN !!! Sherwin Williams is just amazing !!!
Overpriced and underperforming the competition for years…
Buy Behr paint.
Hi Jeremy,
Would love to send you our product.
I used to be a rep for SW, and was one of the few who had experience using the products vs just repeating whatever the sell sheets said. Pro Classic was what they wanted us to push way back when (10+ years ago at this point) but I found it be horrible to work with. It would drag, cover terribly, and the finish looked apartment grade. We used to add Floetrol to it and use Wooster synthetic bristle brushes, which helped, but for the price we shouldn't have had to fight the product so much.
Cashmere ultradeep base is awful, but Cashmere Matte used to be great to work with once you figured out it needed a Golden Eagle or Wooster Microfiber cover. I liked it because you could get the flat look without having a wall that would burnish at the slightest touch. At the time I was in it, I actually thought Benny Moore had the best covering paint for very bold colors (bright reds, bright greens, deep purples, black, etc). I've not had the pleasure of using Emerald, but from the guys I still talk to they describe it as Duration durability, easy to apply like PM 200 or SuperPaint, but that it actually covers. I hated selling Duration back when it was the flagship because I knew it covered terribly for the price they wanted.
On your ceiling paint choice, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the same thing as Brilliance. Also possible is Brilliance is basically the PM400 equivalent. When Brilliance first came out, I found it to be one of the better ceiling paints and the price was actually pretty good. I guess they then switched to Eminence, which I never used, and now this Premium Ceiling Paint that probably sucks compared to the old stuff.
As far as the contractor products being crazy expensive for retail customers: Sherwin-Williams pricing is cumbersome because they have incredibly outdated systems. It took 20 years for them to be able to look up a customer by their email because they had to get some guy to go and update all the mainframes that support their stone age IBM point-of-sale PC's.
If a retail customer wants to buy anything a contractor uses (such as Promar 200): If you get ahold of a store manager or assistant store manager and give a good reason why you're trying to buy that vs one of the retail products, they'll often find a way to get you a reasonable price. You won't get contractor pricing because you don't buy the volume they do, but the SM or ASM are the people to talk to. Your typical rank-and-file employee will just scan the barcode and not realize how absurd the price is.
We had retail customers come in asking for another gallon of a specific color in PM200 ES, and if they said something like, "I had to patch and paint a wall and I have some of the original can left, and I want to mix this one with that one so it has a better chance at matching and not flashing" we had a few different ways to lower that price to something sensible (MSRP on SW contractor products are deliberately stupid high, and there's a whole rabbit hole as to why that truly is). In the case of ceiling paint, if the manager knows anything about painting a ceiling then they'll know it's a bad idea to have two different products on the same ceiling. So I'd think a store manager or assistant store manager would understand why a retail customer would insist on using that ceiling paint (your electrician example could be a good excuse, because you're using the color out of the can they can't use the "different tint machines = won't match" explanation for not selling it to you.).
When in doubt, if you have the ear of a store manager or assistant store manager: Realize in most cases what they need more than anything else to help you is a believable story as to why they did something that might be bending the rules, so they can easily explain it to an auditor or (more likely) their district manager if ever asked about it.
Thanks for the info. I typically use Emerald, but haven't had any issues with Super either. You were complaining about the ceiling paint price but dang, that trim paint is next level crazy. I know a gallon goes a long way when painting trim, but still, $120.49.
Under rated channel 👍🏻
for ceilings i was using the pro mar ceiling paint.. which i loved.. but the last job i did i was seeing a lap mark from the 4 inch wooster roller for the cut in to the 9 inch wooster microfiber roller i was using.. im not sure why it was happening.. since than i went to flat superpaint
3:05 this is what I hate about SW. As a homeowner, my price always depends on who’s working that day.
Love these!
